Overnight, very
Whitely, discreetly,
Very quietly

Our toes, our noses
Take hold on the loam,
Acquire the air.

Nobody sees us,
Stops us, betrays us;
The small grains make room.

Soft fists insist on
Heaving the needles,
The leafy bedding,

Even the paving.
Our hammers, our rams,
Earless and eyeless,

Perfectly voiceless,
Widen the crannies,
Shoulder through holes. We

Diet on water,
On crumbs of shadow,
Bland-mannered, asking

Little or nothing.
So many of us!
So many of us!

We are shelves, we are
Tables, we are meek,
We are edible,

Nudgers and shovers
In spite of ourselves.
Our kind multiplies:

We shall by morning
Inherit the earth.
Our foot’s in the door.

  2. DAS

Like Linda above, I liked both the images and the words. Our weather has also been supportive of such fungal growth! D

  4. This is the area one of your forte isn’t it ?
Still, I especially fascinated by 2nd and the last photos with its
shape and the texture. = Well captured.

  5. It’s hard to believe that it’s mushroom time already. The summer is flying by.

  6. These are all wonderful, but my very favorite is the pink one near the bottom. I’ve never seen a pink mushroom. 🙂

  8. I can smell the rich, fragrant, damp earth and find myself wanting to shrink and explore this magical world while it lasts.
