Flowers—Lines—Ice

Thank you very much Shutterbug Sage! This is a huge help! I’ve made the change to my own site and hope others will do the same.

ShutterbugSage.com

Thanks to the note Leanne Cole added to the bottom of today’s post, you can simply disable the “notify me of follow-up comments via email” option on your WordPress site.

  • From your WordPress dashboard, select Settings and then Discussion from the left-hand side of the page.
  • Just before the Avatars section, untick the box after Follow Comments that says “Show a ‘follow comments’‘ option in the comment form”

  • Be sure to click save at the bottom of the page.

Remember, if you are leaving comments for a blogger who has not yet made this update to their site, be sure to untick the  “notify me of follow-up comments via email” option when you leave your comment.  If you forget to do this, read this related post on how to unsubscribe from all comment chatter after the fact.

  1. That is a radical step. There are people who are interested in the comments you might get, and would like to follow comments. Anyone who does not want to read follow up comments to a post they commented on, can click a little box right under their comment, before publishing their comment, and this will insure that they don’t get all the future comments on the blog they have just read. It’s not that much of a problem.

    • Perhaps people are following comments in different ways. I tend to revisit the site itself to follow comments, rather than fill my inbox (I have a limit on my inbox capacity). I have seen a lot of complaints about this new format, and a lot people (myself included) are forgetting to tick the box. Surely, with practice and time, we would train ourselves to remember (I was already doing better today), but the complaints were outweighing the support for the new system, and so I felt compelled to remove the box, if I could. If it turns out people strongly prefer the option to follow comments, then I’ll consider going back, but for now I’ll encourage people to revisit the post in order to follow comments.

  4. Thanks for the update. This has been driving me crazy and it took me a while to figure out that the default is now to follow follow-up comments—argh. I want to follow up discussion on some comments, but not all. And WP doesn’t make it easy to figure out how to turn them off once they’re on.

I’m not happy about my inbox filling up with notices, maybe you’re not happy about it also, so here’s a solution.

  16. I’ve noticed recently that, all of a sudden, on some blogs the “notify me of new comments” box was ticked by default, whereas before it was unticked by default. Now things seem to have gone back to the way they were before, with the box unticked so you have to click it yourself if you want to be notified of comments on that post. I personally like to be given the option.
